Part of Golden Valley’s Duluth Street to Close for Pedestrian Bridge Removal
Weeks after a crane truck hit a pedestrian bridge in Golden Valley, Hennepin County is taking that bridge down.
To accommodate the bridge removal, Duluth Street will be closed between Regent and Toledo avenues this weekend. It starts at 6 p.m. Friday and reopens at 9 p.m. Sunday.
On April 19, the crane struck the pedestrian bridge near Scheid Park.
County Bridge Engineer John Ekola said while the impact looks like a dent, the hit also dented both beams and the deck of the bridge. The bridge also has been hit a number of times before.
Right now, the bridge is blocked off to pedestrian traffic. Soon, it won’t be there at all.
“We took a look at the bridge, and one of the conclusions we came to is, unfortunately, that the bridge is economically past the point of repair,” Ekola said.
While the stretch of road is closed, traffic will be detoured to Highway 100, Highway 55 and Penn Avenue.
As for the bridge, it isn’t decided if it will be rebuilt.
