Osseo Dist. Elementary Students Plan Trip to Meet Pen Pals
Six fifth-grade students from the Osseo School District will get to meet students from the Sonoran town of Sasabe at the border in April. The students will also meet their pen pals from an Arizona elementary school.
The students come from Park Brook, Basswood, Edinbrook and Elm Creek elementary schools.
Students have been raising money for the trip and collecting school supplies to deliver to the students from Sasabe. So far, they’ve raised $17,000 for the trip and plan to take stacks of school supplies.
Tammie Epley has coordinated the Students Connecting Through International Services program for more than 20 years, where students would collect supplies and travel to Sasabe. This year, the students will meet one another at the border. Epley says officials will close down a loading dock to let the kids meet and have a party. The meet-up will happen on International Children’s Day.
“We just have a really fun time with kids being kids and being able to share experiences together,” said Epley.
