Parents Discuss School Safety Issues at Church Meeting
Parents shared fears and also got some comfort on the topic of school safety at Maple Grove Lutheran Church. Second grade teacher Jessie Hanson helped organize the event after some families at her church expressed concern in the wake of recent school shootings across the country. She invited a school security expert from the Osseo District and a family therapist to speak. Hanson is a teacher and a parent of two school-age children.
“When I see things on the news about school shootings, I worry about both of them,” said Hanons. “But I think I spend more time as a teacher worrying about it, in my classroom trying to imagine where we would hide, or how we would get out if we needed to get out of a classroom in an emergency.”
Hanson tells parents they’re not alone in having fears. Events like the church meeting can help heal by connecting parents with each other.
