Osseo To Make Police Chief Permanent City Administrator
Osseo police chief Shane Mikkelson has been serving as the city’s interim administrator since spring — and he may be stepping into the role permanently.
In a split vote on Sept. 9, the council moved ahead with plans to make his dual role as police chief and administrator a permanent fixture.
“I think [Mikkelson is] doing a great job and we owe it to him to give him some stability between now and the end of the year,” said Mayor Duane Poppe.
Mikkelson took over as interim administrator following the resignation of Riley Grams in May.
Council Members John Hall and Juliana Hultstrom cast votes against making Mikkelson permanent chief.
“[Residents] don’t want to see the dual role, they want to see a full-time city administrator, they want to see Shane go back to the police department,” Hall said.
Hall told Mikkelson he didn’t believe he should show up to meetings wearing a police uniform if he’s the city’s administrator.
“Right now I’m an interim, I’m not the city administrator, and I’m a police chief,” Mikkelson responded.
The city’s Human Resources Committee will negotiate a contract with Mikkelson. That contract will then be subject to a final council vote.
