Osseo Police Hand Students a Surprise, Stress Prom Safety
Many students from Osseo Area Schools are preparing for prom this week. The Osseo School District and Osseo police want to do something different to encourage safety.
The Osseo Police Department surprised students Wednesday by greeting them at the end of the school day. Officers were there to see if students buckled up as they headed out of the parking lot. As a reward for doing the right thing, police and a student group handed out 150 Holiday gift cards. Students can use the cards to buy Monster Energy drinks from the Osseo Holiday store.
Prom is Saturday and police want this to serve as a reminder for students to buckle up and be safe.
“Teenagers result in about 56 percent, according to the CDC, of all deaths from motor vehicle accidents as a result of not wearing their seat belt,” said Osseo police officer Anthony Mortinson. “We want to make sure these kids are getting a positive message, back to be able to wear their seat belt.”
Distracted driving is also a problem. Police remind students to stay off their cell phones and keep their eyes on the road.
