Osseo Company Shares Cold Weather Clothing Tips
At Pioneer Midwest in Osseo, the frigid temps equals scorching hot profits. When winter arrives, cold-weather gear becomes a popular item.
“It’s one of our biggest year for sales yet,” said Joseph Morey, a Pioneer Midwest spokesperson.
Most skiers, like Morey, aren’t deterred by a polar plunge. They embrace the elements.
“I know a few years ago we got a cold spell where it was like negative 40 for like a week straight,” Morey said. “I was out there skiing. If you are dressed right and have the proper insulation for your hands, feet and body, the you’ll be a happy skier.”
Pioneer Midwest keeps caps, gloves, jackets and other cold-weather gear in stock. The gear keeps winter athletes heated up on the frozen slopes and trails.
“We’ve got jackets that are designed to both vent and keep wind off you so that you don’t sweat too much,” Morey said. “But you are also able to keep those elements off of you.”
But Morey is not alone.
“I’ve spent much of the whole day in negative 10 and I’m fine,” said Bonnie Weiskopf, who is an avid skier. She believes the key to staying warm is dressing appropriately.
“I think it offers elements that we don’t get any other time of the year,” Weiskopf said. “You have the ice so you can go skating. You have the snow so you can go skiing. Lots of outdoor activities.”
Which brings the old Minnesota adage, “there is no such such thing as bad weather – just bad clothing” to mind.
Osseo’s Pioneer Midwest says think “wicking, warmth and wind “
When it comes to choosing the right cold-weather gear there are three preparation keys to surviving in the elements – wicking, warmth and wind.
At the base level, wear something that wicks, such as wool. The next layer is about warmth, find something with bulk such as down layer. Finally be sure to wear gore-tex, or a wind fabric to block those icy winds.
“We’ve got jackets that are designed to both vent and keep wind off you so that you don’t sweat too much,” Morey said. “But you are also able to keep those elements off of you.”
