One Good Deed’s ‘Scarf Bomb’ Spreads Warmth in Record Numbers
One Good Deed, a Golden Valley-based nonprofit, held its seventh annual “scarf bomb” over the weekend. Its quest to keep people warm proved to be bigger than ever with nearly 550 bags of warm clothing spread across Twin Cities parks.
The nonprofit brought two busloads of volunteers to four parks in Minneapolis and St. Paul: Loring Park, Cedar Avenue Field, Rice Park and Kellogg Park.
Founder Michelle Christensen said it’s the first year the nonprofit filled two buses. It’s also the first year volunteers distributed items in Cedar Avenue Field and Rice Park.
Volunteers walked through the parks dropping off warm clothing including scarves, hats, snow pants and winter coats.
Christensen said in each park, some families were waiting for the much-needed relief from the cold.
“The ripple of kindness flowing from one person to the next. No judgement, no rules. Just kindness and pure human compassion. It was beautiful,” Christensen said.
As January temperatures turn from above-average to below freezing, Christensen said their event came at the perfect time.
“We know that today as the snow falls and we look outside,” Christensen said. “The timing and the act of kindness was absolutely perfect and exactly the way the universe intended it.”
Donors and volunteers made this year’s scarf bomb possible. Each Wednesday of December, community members gathered to tag and bag donations and “Blessing Bags” for those in need.
One Good Deed is built on the principle of doing a good deed every month. February’s event is creating Valentine’s Day cards for seniors. Anyone is welcome to create cards and supplies are provided. More information about the Feb. 3 card-making event and future events is available on One Good Deed’s website.
