Off the Clock: Mayor Kelli Slavik
Plymouth Mayor Kelli Slavik wears many hats. Part-mayor. Part-volunteer. Part-mom. Her passion for Plymouth started more than 20 years ago when she and her husband decided to put down roots in the city. That’s when the former paralegal put away her brief case for a job she wouldn’t trade for the world.
“I wanted to be home with the kids,” said Slavik.
Her two children are young adults now. Both are in college. It’s a big change to her routine. She spent the past 20 years running around with her children.
“I’ve been a hockey mom, a dance mom,” she explained.
Running Around on the Trails Too
When Slavik is not running around with her kids, she’s running on the trails. Last year she ran the prestigious Boston Marathon. She says it was a great experience and something she’ll treasure for the rest of her life.
Slavik also says she treasures her time as mayor, but will try something different at the end of the year. After 20 years on the Plymouth City Council, including the last 12 as mayor, Slavik is not running for re-election. With the extra time, she is planning more getaways with her family.
Taking Time to Volunteer
Slavik says she will never grow tired of volunteering in the community. She sits on several boards, including Beyond the Yellow Ribbon and the Plymouth Civic League. On Wednesday she visited Gladys’ Place, an in-home memory care facility, where a traveling zoo entertained clients. Slavik says meeting the staff and clients was special.
“To see the extra care that they get and just to see the patients interacting in this way. And it was really neat to see them in more of a home setting, to have family there,” said Slavik.
The mayor says she’ll miss the public appearances and interacting with Plymouth residents when she retires, but says she will try to continue to make a difference in the city she loves.
Passion for Cooking
There’s also something few people might not know about Slavik–she’s an excellent cook. Her favorite dish: a spinach and arugula flatbread with mushrooms and olive oil.
