North Hennepin Community College Launches Nature Immersion Class
North Hennepin Community College partnered with Three Rivers Park District to organize an environmental justice and nature immersion program. The goal of the class is to get students outside and learn about nature.
This fall North Hennepin Community College is bringing the classroom experience into nature with a new immersive program. The environmental justice and nature immersion program was organized by North Hennepin Community College for both students from the college as well as high school students from around the metro.
“Our class is environmental justice and it’s an immersion class to get student’s outside and connected to nature as well as learning about equity and diversity, resources and opportunities for students to get outside,” said NHCC student Ali Tomashak.
In a partnership with Three Rivers Parks District, part of the class involves a hike and seed spreading activity that took place at Eastman Nature Center last weekend, before the students head out on their three-day immersion at the YMCA Northern Lights camp at the end of this month.
“So far the highlight has really been visiting this nature center it’s just great being out in the woods, just hearing the sounds and looking at the little things,” said Brooklyn Center High School Student Dalorian Davis.
After students return from their trip in early October, they will be presenting on their experiences at an event on campus. This event will feature a drum and dance exhibition as well as a documentary screening that will highlight the trip.
