North Hennepin Class Teaches Sign Language to Osseo High School Students
When Osseo Senior High couldn’t find a teacher to teach their courses in American Sign Language, they almost had to cancel the class.
“We have three sections moving forward and then we spent all summer looking for a teacher,” said Michelle Mazanec, the learning coordinator at Osseo Senior High.
Instead, they reached out to North Hennepin Community College and developed an online course taught by a North Hennepin instructor. Students can also earn college credit for the course.
“Higher education and secondary education is changing and this is how we are filling in the holes,” said Kathy Hendrickson with North Hennepin.
Because of the popularity of the course, Osseo Senior High plans to offer an additional section of the course next year.
“It can be found anywhere so while I might not go into a profession with it, I still want to know it so if a client comes in I might want to speak to them in sign language,” said Linnea Noeldner, an Osseo Senior High student taking the course.
