Newsmakers: Author Jodi Pfarr Hosts Oct. 11 Business Diversity and Inclusion Seminar in Brooklyn Park
The Rotary Club of Maple Grove will host an all-day business seminar to promote inclusivity and diversity in the workplace, an event open to everyone hosted by an author on the topic.
“Urgency of Awareness: Creating an Inclusive Environment for Diverse Populations” is on Wednesday, Oct. 11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom of North Hennepin Community College in Brooklyn Park.
The seminar is hosted by Jodi Pfarr, who wrote The Urgency of Awareness: Unlocking the Power Within Organizational, Individual, and Community Efforts in 2021. Pfarr recently joined CCX Media for our Newsmakers segment to talk about her work and why events like this, she feels, are so important.
“The world is just getting more and more diverse, (with) more experiences,” said Pfarr. “We have five generations in the workplace right now and I know we know that’s a big one. If you’re a millennial, you show up to work differently than if you’re a Gen Xer or a baby boomer. When they come to the work setting, what they think is feeling acceptable is different. If we don’t have awareness of our own experience, then we can’t create a rich culture, a positive culture in our work setting.”
Pfarr also acknowledged that world events–the murder of George Floyd chief among them–have only brought more to the surface the need for more people to be more aware of the realities of others’ experiences.
“Once we become aware of those experiences, then we can have some really deeper conversations about how we make our organization, how do we make our communities more accessible to all?” Pfarr said. “But if we don’t gain that awareness individually, it becomes really, really difficult to really have real conversations about how to make changes to benefit our organization or community.”
