Nearly $1 Million in Federal Funding Obtained To Expand PUPS Animal Rescue Shelter
An animal impound shelter that has served the northwest metro for decades is getting some much-needed financial help from the federal government.
PUPS, or Pets Under Police Security, provides a temporary home for stray animals in Maple Grove, New Hope, Plymouth and Robbinsdale.
“PUPS rescues hundreds of pets a year, and for animals that can’t be reunited with their families, they partner with shelters like the ones here today to make sure the animals find loving homes,” said U.S. Rep. Kelly Morrison, D-Third District, at an April 9 press conference. “And I’m so proud to announce that we have secured almost $1 million in federal funding for this amazing program.”
City officials say the facility needs to be expanded and modernized to keep up with community needs.
“When you look at the facility, it’s 30-plus years old, so we built it and it was at the end of its life cycle,” said Maple Grove Police Chief Eric Werner. “Communities have grown significantly since then. And we’re planning for what the needed growth is right now, as well as the growth into the future. And modernize the building.”
PUPS rescued more than 1,000 animals in 2024.
