Food Shelf Packs Summer Boxes for Kids
Summer is just around the corner, and NEAR Food Shelf is getting ready. When school lets out students no longer have access to free and reduced cost breakfasts and lunches. NEAR helps make up the loss by distributing boxes of food for the kids to their regular clients.
Volunteers at the food shelf Tuesday packed about 300 boxes. Next week, they’ll do 300-400 more. The boxes will go to families during the June, July, and August no-school months.
NEAR officials say it’s important, not only to the kids, but to the volunteers. “It’s very rewarding to make sure they have this,” says Jan Monroe. “Because then you know that those kids are getting something to eat.”
