National Guard Deploys More Than 50 Soldiers to Middle East
More than 50 Minnesota National Guard members said goodbye to their loved ones on Thursday in Brooklyn Park as they prepared for deployment in the Middle East.
They’re the 204th Medical Company Area Support (MCAS).
The 204th provides medical care for U.S. service members and allies. They’re made up of a range of soldiers — from those trained in first aid to physicians and surgeons.
“This is a small contingent that’s going, but we are able to support a large population,” said Maj. Jakob Reding.
The ceremony, held in the Regional Support Headquarters in Brooklyn Park, was filled with soldiers and family members.
Emotions were high, laden with pride, excitement and nerves. In the audience, people clapped, cried and embraced.
A number of soldiers were honored for their accomplishments in the years leading up to the deployment.
For about 75% of the soldiers, it’s their first deployment.
“I think there is always a little bit of nervousness,” said 1st Sgt. Brent Emery. “But we’re a very well-trained unit and are prepared for our mission. But there’s always a little bit of the unknown going forward — and that’s where we rely on the training.”
This deployment is set to last about a year.
Family Ties
During the ceremony, leaders spoke to the soldiers, but also to the families staying behind. Each of these soldiers is leaving someone at home.
“[I’m] definitely leaving some folks behind that will be eager to have me back,” Emery said.
His wife, dog, parents and in-laws will be waiting for him.
Reding has advice for those staying behind: stay strong.
“Work through the sacrifice,” he said. “It’s hard work being home alone.”
