MSP Home Tour Features Golden Valley Midcentury Modern
The MSP Home Tour is this weekend featuring 21 homes that showcase the latest remodeling trends.
One of the them is a midcentury modern-style home in Golden Valley.
When Laura Ronlund and her family moved into the home 14 years ago, they knew it needed some work before it could become the home of their dreams.
“From the moment we moved into the house, we knew that it had a ton of potential. But, it wasn’t quite there,” said Ronlund.
So when they started construction at the end of October, they were more than ready to turn their dreams into reality.
“In one day’s time, this whole end of the house was completely demo’d and it was amazing,” said Ronlund.
Creating Usable Space
Ronlund said one of her goals was creating more functional space.
In the kitchen, counter seating and storage were added.
Soffits were also removed.
“The biggest change was getting rid of all the soffits and opening it up, so now we have high ceilings all the way throughout,” said Ronlund.
The remodel continued to the entryway where more privacy was desired.
“This was one big, open giant space. We had windows on three of the four sides of the room,” said Ronlund.
The area was sectioned off to three separate areas: a mudroom, equipment area and entryway.
“I feel like our house makes sense now,” said Ronlund.
Even though the transformation was significant, the Ronlunds worked with an interior designer to keep elements of their midcentury home intact, such as keeping the original teak floors.
They even found a way to nod to the home’s history.
“The slat wall on the island was an accent piece we designed to try and pull in the original parquet flooring of the dining room,” says Designer April Dishno.
The Ronlunds’ home is one of two midcentury homes featured on the MSP Home Tour.
“We cover the full basis and we actually have an ADU, an Accessory Dwelling Unit, and a new build in St. Paul as well,” said Beatrice Owen, executive director of NARI-MN.
The goal of the MSP Home Tour is to make the tour a learning experience.
“The homeowners are going to be available during the tour,” said Owen. “So attendees can ask the tough questions, ‘How was the process?’ and ‘Did you have plaster dust everywhere?’ And really get a feel for what the remodel looked like.”
After their experience, the Ronlunds are now ready for more.
“I’m already planning our next project,” said Ronlund.
Along with the 21 homes, the tour also features a library and a creative enterprise zone in St. Paul.
