Minnesota Black Authors Showcase Is Feb. 24 at Brooklyn Park Library
An organization highlighting Black writers will bring a dozen authors to the Brooklyn Park Library this weekend.
Minnesota Black Authors Expo is hosting an event called “Bringing Books to Life” for Black History Month.
“It’s kind of impossible for me to understand or believe, but there are people who are not Black who don’t have one Black author on their bookshelf,” said Dorothy Nins, executive director of Minnesota Black Authors Expo. “So we’re trying to change that. We want people to have a diverse reading opportunity in their homes.”
Authors will read from their books and connect one-on-one with readers while at the library, which is located at 8500 W. Broadway.
“All 12 authors will be there signing their books, talking about their books, talking about what inspired them, talking about their process,” Nins said. “It’s really to encourage people to write as well … I think it was Toni Morrison that said, if you don’t find the book you want in the library, write it. And so that’s what we want to do, is inspire kids to write and read. Our motto is write, read, lead. And encouraging them to do it now, that you don’t have to be an adult to write a book. You can do it now. Your story is important.”
The authors will have a selection of books for all ages. They’ll address topics ranging from spirituality to Afrofuturism.
“Lots of childrens’ books are featured,” Nins said. “Whoever wants to come, you will find something for your taste in reading.”
