Minneapolis Officer Killed in Line of Duty Called Maple Grove Home
The Minneapolis Police Department is calling Jamal Mitchell, 36, “one of its finest.” Mitchell, a Minneapolis police officer and Maple Grove resident, died in the line of duty on Thursday.
Mitchell was a fiancé, a father and a son. Officer Mitchell is also being hailed as a hero.
A news release said Minneapolis police was responding to a shooting at an apartment building Thursday night in Minneapolis. There, Mitchell was killed in a gunfight. He died of his injuries at the hospital.
Mitchell was a member of the department for less than two years.
Another officer was treated for injuries and released, while the suspected shooter died at the scene.
State Sen. Warren Limmer (R-Maple Grove) said in a statement that “his death was made even more senseless as he was ambushed trying to help someone who was injured.”
Limmer, who represents Maple Grove where Mitchell lived, also asked the community to join him in offering condolences to Mitchell’s loved ones.
