Maple Grove Students Plant Trees Lost to EAB
Weaver Lake Elementary School students are planting trees and learning skills you can’t get behind a desk.
Students planted 13 trees to replace the one’s that died from disease and Emerald Ash Borer. The trees will support student STEM learning in the years to come.
Second grade students will be able to tap the maple trees to make syrup. Fifth grade students will study invasive species and how it impacts trees.
Teachers said Friday’s planting event went beyond environmental studies.
“They’re learning teamwork, they’re taking turns filling in the hole, they’re learning about the process of planting the trees, the depth and width of hole, they’ve been doing some measuring, so a lot of aspects during the planting process,” explained 5th grade teacher Kyle Schumacher.
The school used its $2,400 Hennepin County grant to cover the project.
