Maple Grove Retires One Police K9, Swears In Another
A Maple Grove police dog retired this week, while another was sworn in to take its place.
Calo, a Maple Grove police dog, helped the department restart its K9 unit in 2018.
For 20 years prior, Maple Grove had gone without a police dog unit. Calo was the first dog sworn in through the revamped program.
After five years assisting the Maple Grove Police Department, Calo retired on June 5.
“I had the best partner you could possibly ask for,” said Maple Grove Police Sgt. Keith Stuart. “So, it’s kind of an emotional thing for us.”
Calo will live with Stuart, his long-time handler.
Meanwhile, a new police dog named Judd was sworn-in as Calo’s replacement.
Judd and his handler, police officer Tyler Huso finished training at the St. Paul Police Academy this May.
He has certifications in apprehension, article and building search, and narcotics detection from the United States Canine Association.
K-9 Judd was officially sworn in! In support of his canine partner and to make it official, Officer Huso raised his right hand while K-9 Judd listened attentively.
