Maple Grove Police Chief Reflects on Peace Officers Memorial Day
May 15 marked National Peace Officers Memorial Day. Maple Grove Police Chief Eric Werner reflected on the day after attending the funeral on Friday for Katie Leising, the 29-year-old St. Croix County Sheriff’s deputy who shot and killed by a suspected impaired driver who had driven off the road.
“It’s always impressive to see the show of support when you have 1,000 law enforcement vehicles show up and thousands of officers show up, and I just think that gives the magnitude of the loss,” Werner told CCX News on Monday.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz ordered all flags at half-staff on Monday to mark the occasion.
Leising was the fourth Wisconsin officer killed this year.
A Minnesota sheriff’s deputy was also killed last month in a shootout with a domestic assault suspect. Pope County Sheriff’s Deputy Joshua Owen died on his 44th birthday in the incident in west-central Minnesota. Two other law enforcement officers were injured. The suspect was also killed.
CCX News will have an extended conversation with Chief Werner as part of our Newsmakers segment this weekend.
