Maple Grove Pet Store Finds Resale Niche
Consignment shops that sell clothing are a dime and a dozen. The Pet Garage in Maple Grove lets pet owners buy gently-used pet items for half the price.
“We had been fostering for the Humane Society for several years which is where we got the idea for the shop,” said Betty VanGorder, co-founder of Pet Garage. “We had acquired quite a bit of the pet supplies for several types of animals. So we just wanted to open a store where we could sell things that were gently used and help pet owners safe some money.”
The Pet Garage Gives Back
The Pet Garage opened last July. Its model is similar to several other resale shops. It allows people to sell pet gear to the shop. In return, customers get a third of what the shop will make of off the sale. Sellers can also opt to have the money put on a store gift card which offers more money toward purchases. The store offers pet supplies for dogs, cats, critters, birds, reptiles and fish. The shop is all about helping pet parents save some money. However, it also helps local shelters by donating a portion of its profits.
“We wanted to make sure when we created the store that we had a method of giving back,” said VanGorder. “We chose to pick seven rescues and then every month we choose a different rescue and we donate back 1 percent of sales.”
The Pet Garage also offers grooming. For hours of operations and pricing on grooming you can visit their website and Facebook page.
