Maple Grove Girl Pursues Olympic Luge
Mikhala Rivers from Maple Grove tried out for the junior development team in the sport of luge and made the cut. She’ll get to go back to the Olympic Training Center at Lake Placid to learn more about the sport.
“She is actually leaving this Friday to go to training in Lake Placid for a week and over the winter months she will have to be in Lake Placid for a period of 40 additional days for training,” said her mom Susie Iverson, in an email. “She will have many years of training as Luge is a long process to reach the Olympics.”
Rivers has always enjoyed sledding in her Maple Grove backyard. She tried out for the Luge junior development team last summer in Minneapolis and made the first cut. Then, she got to learn more about luge over winter break at the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid.
Rivers is excited about her opportunities.
“I hope I’m going to make it,” said Mikhala Rivers, in an earlier interview. “I hope I’m going to get to slide more.”
Rivers also hopes one day there will be a luge track in Minnesota.
