Maple Grove Bakery Falls Victim to COVID-19 Pandemic
It’s a not-so sweet ending for a Maple Grove bakery. Sugar & Spice Sweetery will permanently close on Sunday, June 28, at 3 p.m. due to the economic effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Owner Dawn Olson-Wallerus opened the storefront bakery February 3, just six weeks before a global pandemic halted everything. CCX News featured the store in Business Matters.
Maple Grove Bakery Was “Sweet Dream” for Owner
For Olson-Wallerus, the first few weeks of business was exciting. Friends, family, and new and past clients visited the store for freshly baked cinnamon rolls and scratch-made cakelets.
However, on March 16, Minnesota Governor ordered the temporary closure of restaurants, bars and entertainment venues. of public amusement. It was a difficult blow to small businesses. Since Sugar & Spice wasn’t a dine-in establishment, it remained open for take-out customers looking to support small businesses. The support was there the first few weeks and the shop stayed abreast of what guests were looking for.
“We kept coming up with kits to keep the kids busy at home, simple celebration cakes, but it just wasn’t enough,” Olson-Wallerus said in a statement to CCX News.
Olson-Wallerus said she will maintain her custom-cake business within the space, sinche she’ll have access to baking supplies and a consultation room.
Other Maple Grove restaurants that have closed recently due to the pandemic include Patrick’s Bakery and Cafe and Cafe Donuts and Ice Cream.
