Maple Grove Approves Large New Building for Boston Scientific
The Maple Grove City Council approved construction plans for a large office and lab building for Boston Scientific on Aug. 21.
City officials dubbed the proposal “Project Black Bear” and did not reveal the end user.
However, Boston Scientific confirmed to CCX News that it would occupy the building.
“I just want to tell you that I’m really excited about this site,” said Maple Grove City Council Member Kristy Janigo. “The buildings and grounds are not only beautiful, but they also have many features that really support the environment.”
New Boston Scientific Building Will Employ At Least 250 People
The 400,000-square-foot, three-story office building is expected to employ at least 250 people.
The building will be located north of Interstate 694 between Hemlock Lane and Highway 169, a site in the city’s gravel mining area down the street from Lowe’s.
“The look has a retro feel with modern sensibilities and would create an excellent look along the freeway,” wrote Peter Vickerman, Maple Grove planning manager in council documents.
Another 150,000-square-foot addition could be built out at the site in the future.
The Maple Grove City Council approved a $6.4 million tax increment financing package to help fund the project in June.
Minnesota’s Department of Employment and Economic Development is also contributing approximately $6 million to the project through the Minnesota Investment Fund and the Job Creation Fund.
The building will include sustainability features like solar panels, geothermal climate control and electric vehicle chargers. There will also be a gathering area where the company could host events or food trucks.
“I want to commend you for your leadership on this project and for bringing so many different features to us,” Janigo said. “I’m truly blown away by the thoroughness and I think that with all these features, the future employees are going to love working there. All that natural lighting [is] going to support their mental health while they’re at their desks and they’ll certainly enjoy taking breaks outside.”
Maple Grove beat out competition from cities in Massachusetts and Georgia to host the new building.
“I’m excited for this to be kind of the face of Maple Grove as you drive into the city from our interstate there,” Janigo added.
