Local Businesses help with Diaper Need Awareness Week
This week is Diaper Need Awareness Week. Advocates say people don’t often think about people needing diapers.
No government assistance can be used for diapers. Advocates say people often compensate by making one diaper last longer than it is healthy. Local businesses like Acorn Mini Storage are partnering with the Diaper Bank of Minnesota and Robbinsdale-based ‘Helping Us Grow’ (HUG) to help fill the need.
“It’s not just the poorest of the poor it’s even middle class families,” says M.E. Kirwan, a Board Member with the Diaper Bank of MN. “That’s what really tugs at my heart strings. You hear stories of people reusing diapers, which is just so sad. Unfortunately if diapers aren’t changed frequently enough, there can be infection and a lot of that is preventable by just having adequate diaper supply. “
Each month HUG offices distribute 10,000 diapers to families in need. Last calendar year HUG distributed 101,410 diapers and pull ups. That need is expected to be even larger this year.
How You Can Help
If you would like to donate you can do so at the acorn storage units in Brooklyn Park and Champlin. You either donate full packages of diapers, or single diapers that you have lying around.
