Liberians Lobby for Citizenship in Washington, D.C.
A Brooklyn Park woman named Annie Yonly who faces deportation spoke on the steps of the U.S. Capitol on Thursday. The DED policy expires at the end of the month. Liberians on DED status want a pathway to citizenship.
“In two weeks, they’re telling me to go home and leave my kids,” says Yonly. “I don’t know who I am going to leave them with. Who’s going to take care of them?”
Many Liberians who fled civil war legally lived and worked in the U.S. for more than a quarter century. Yonly has lived in Minnesota since 1984 and works as a nurse at the University of Minnesota Fairview Hospital. She and other local liberians are calling on President Trump to extend DED once more. They are urging Congress to approve legislation providing a pathway to citizenship.
