Hy-Vee Creates Chalk Mural to Honor North Memorial Health Care Workers
Hy-Vee enlisted the help of a professional chalk artist to create a mural outside of North Memorial Health Hospital to thank local health care workers. The mural’s message will be “health care workers are superheroes.”
“Everyone in the hospital is really contributing to caring for the community and this is a nice way to pay tribute to their service,” said Katy Sullivan, with Hy-Vee.
Professional muralist Kathleen Roling started work on the mural around 9 a.m. Monday. She’s an award-winning professional chalk artist who has created chalk images at festivals, contests and events for entertainment and advertising. Roling and her team created the mural out of hand-mixed chalk paint. The mural at North Memorial Health Hospital is unique because it’s under a covered area so it will likely last a month or so. Most of the time, a mural will be washed away by the first rainfall.
“I’m a very empathetic person so it was hard when all of this happened to hear the stories of doctors camping in their backyards to stay away from their families during this time.” said Roling. “They are like superheroes.”
Roling’s artwork will be featured at hospitals in eight states. She was headed to Rochester when she finished the mural in Robbinsdale.
The mural is part of Hy-Vee’s current #HelpfulSmileStrong campaign.
