House Lawmakers View Brooklyn Park’s $11 Million Plan for CAC Expansion
Minnesota House lawmakers toured Brooklyn Park’s Community Activity Center (CAC) on Wednesday, as the city seeks $11 million in state funding to renovate and expand it.
The CAC, referred to as the Northwest Metro Regional Athletic Facility on the tour, is one of hundreds of projects competing for state funding. Brooklyn Park leaders hope their project will be selected.
The project would add on a new fieldhouse with basketball courts to the recreation facility. A few years back, the city considered replacing one of its ice sheets with a basketball court, but that idea received significant community pushback. This addition would preserve both ice sheets.
Plans also include remodeling offices and renovating the west entry and lobby.

This blueprint shows some of the potential changes that could be made to improve the Community Activity Center.
First-term Rep. Huldah Momanyi-Hiltsley (DFL-Brooklyn Park) authored a bill to fund the project.
She said it’s important to invest in the community to keep crime rates down, while also serving people of all ages.
“The needs of the community are changing. So advancing and really developing and making sure that this facility addresses the changing population within the northwest corridor is critical to our communities,” Hiltsley said.
This was one of many Twin Cities and suburban community stops that the House Capital Investment Committee made throughout the week. Lawmakers also visited the Plymouth city center redevelopment site on Thursday.
