Hennepin Tech’s Plant Sale Provides Hands-On Experience for Students
The ordering phase of the Hennepin Technical College annual plant sale is underway. Not only does the school produce healthy plants, they’re growing the horticulture professionals of tomorrow.
“The greenhouse, there’s just everything from hydroponics, to running a crop, to just different greenhouse operations,” said Hennepin Tech student Leah Rezac.
As a student, Rezac is part of a small army that makes the Hennepin Technical College plant sale happen every year.
“We do a lot of transplanting, taking cuttings, watering in the greenhouse,” said Rezac.
“We’re almost the same as last year but not quite,” said Deb Kvamme, Hennepin Technical College instructor.
Kvamme is in charge of the landscape and horticulture programs at the college.
“It’s really difficult when the students grow so many different things and then to have everything listed,” said Kvamme.
There won’t be any in-person browsing of the flora this year. All the ordering is online.
“We’ve grouped some things. For example, instead of buying singles we’ve grouped it into buying a certain amount of plants for containers. So say you have a container in your patio. We have it down to so many plants fit into this box at this price,” said Kvamme.
The other important function of the plant sale remains unchanged.
“This is definitely a lot of hands-on experience. That is going to be definitely useful to me as I go on in my career in this industry,” said Rezac.
Online ordering continues through May 12. You schedule your curbside pickup at Hennepin Technical College when you place your order. Pickup dates begin May 6 and run through May 14.
