Hennepin County Temporarily Closes Brooklyn Center Hotel
Travelodge by Wyndham in Brooklyn Center has temporarily closed due to an order by the Hennepin County Public Health Department. A county spokesperson said they identified multiple health and safety violations during recent inspections.
This follows a discussion of the “evolving situation” at the Feb. 9 Brooklyn Center City Council meeting. In a statement, the spokesperson said this action “was taken to protect guests and staff while the hotel completes required corrective measures before reopening.”
The county provided the hotel owner with a list of corrective actions. Those include cleaning and sanitation, securing exits and entrances, and maintaining guest and staff training records. The spokesperson said those steps must be completed before licenses are reinstated.
“While suspensions are rare, they are necessary when conditions pose serious risks to public health. The department remains committed to working with all license holders to meet safety standards and will reinspect the property once corrective actions are complete,” the statement said.
Fire Department’s Inspection
Just last week in a city council meeting, Brooklyn Center Fire Chief Todd Berg pointed out problems and code violations discovered during inspections.
Those included dried vomit and blood splatters on the walls, broken fire doors and non-working heaters. Berg also said there’s a problem of unregistered guests.
Berg also said in the meeting that the police department responded to 102 calls for service to the Travelodge from Jan. 9 through Feb. 6.
“The hotel has done a bunch of work over the last couple weeks to clean up, but there is a high concern by city staff we will wind up being right back where it was a few weeks ago after these annual inspections are complete,” Berg said on Feb. 9.
