Golden Valley’s ‘Man in Black’ Plays the State Fair
This week at the Great Minnesota Get Together, a Golden Valley musician was on stage playing the outlaw country hits.
Jay Ernest is the front man for Church of Cash, a Johnny Cash cover band.
“You want to play the right song at the right moment, and sometimes that takes a little bit of finessing to get that energy right,” he said.
They brought in a large group of fairgoers who were not afraid to walk, or for that matter, dance the line.

Jay Ernest, a Golden Valley resident, is the front man for Church of Cash, a Johnny Cash cover band.
“Whether you know that Church of Cash is here or whether you’re just walking on by, you’re gonna hear the sounds of Church of Cash listening to that Johnny Cash music and you’re going to come on in and see it,” Ernest said.
But it wasn’t just passerby’s that came out to listen to the band.
“It’s the Great Minnesota Get Together, you see people from all over the state,” Ernest said. “I normally tour all over the state anyway. So I have fans that come in from Aitkin, from way up north, from down south, Winona. You name it.”
But even for a band that’s been everywhere—man—some of the best shows are still right here at home.
“People come here ready to have a good time,” Ernest said. “People wait all year to come to the State Fair. And we’re happy to be a part of it.”
