Golden Valley Rotary Club Starts Child Literacy Project
A new project started by the Golden Valley Rotary Club is making sure young readers have access to age-appropriate books.
The club packaged and donated 400 literacy packets to PRISM’s Marketplace Food Shelf in Golden Valley.
“We’ve got a Dr. Seuss book in there, a hard cover,” said club member Brian Liedtke as he showed off a packet. “We have this wheel which shows stages of growth. And we’ve got a couple of paperbacks, a couple of those.”
The packets will be distributed to families with children that are three years old and younger.
The Rotarians hope these books can spark an early passion for learning.
“The earlier kids start to become accustomed to books and having been read to — it teaches, you know, left to right progression,” Liedtke said. “And it just makes kindergarten easier.”
A grant from the Rotary Club Foundation helped to pay for the books.
