Golden Valley Prepares for Major Civic Campus Revamp
City officials in Golden Valley are making plans for a revamped civic center campus and are asking architects to develop a new vision for the city’s primary government buildings.
“The idea is to come up with a plan for where all of the new facilities should go,” said Chloe McGuire, Golden Valley’s deputy community development director. “So, a new city hall, public safety building, library — and actually a new water tower too, which is going to be really fun because we can decide where that goes.”
The city recently issued a request for proposals for a firm to redesign the civic center campus.
It’s unclear exactly what the budget for the rebuild will be, but McGuire said it’s expected to be millions of dollars.
The city already has access to local sales tax dollars that can be used to rebuild the fire station and police department.
Meanwhile, McGuire said the city is considering adding a walking trail or pavilion-style gathering area for events such as a farmer’s market or a festival.
Most of the buildings on the civic center campus were constructed decades ago and need a revamp, according to McGuire.
“It’s just to provide good working facilities for our staff,” she said. “We’ve looked at some remodel options. I think the majority of the facilities were built in the 60s, so they’re just a little outdated, undersized. And specifically, our police and fire need some upgraded amenities.”
The design work is expected to start by the end of this year. The remaining timeline would be determined by the city council.
