Golden Valley, New Hope Mayors Get a Pie in the Face
We’re used to politicians talking about everyone getting a piece of the pie, but on Thursday, they took it all for themselves. The mayors of Golden Valley, New Hope, and Crystal signed up to take pies to the face in exchange for donations to a YMCA fundraiser.
Ten bucks gave you one vote. Whoever got the most votes in a round, got a heaping helping of face-pie. In the 11 a.m. round, Kathi Hemken of New Hope faced off against Golden Valley’s Shep Harris. The race ended in a tie. But Minnesota isn’t Florida – no lengthy recounts here – both mayors got their own pie.
All for a good cause.
Crystal’s Mayor Jim Adams was on hand to administer the dual pie-ing. That had Mayor Hemken looking for revenge as she faced off against Adams in the noon round. Mayor Harris wiped the whipped cream off his face and promised threatened to call in votes for whichever mayor failed to be nice enough to him.
“Clearly, on this, unabashedly yes. I’m not gonna skirt around the issue. All bribes are welcome for a good cause like the YMCA,” said Harris, laughing.
After an hour of political wrangling and frantic last-minute calls for votes on the part of Mayor Hemken, the votes were tallied and… Another tie, two more pies, and another round of donations for the YMCA.
The New Hope YMCA hopes to have $96,000 in donations by the end of this Give to the Max campaign.
