Golden Valley Finds Diesel Contaminant in Four Park Ice Rinks
The city of Golden Valley is recommending that you and your pets stay off the skating rinks at four of its parks.
The recycled asphalt used to build the base for the rinks contains a diesel byproduct contaminate at levels exceeding what’s allowed at a park by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.
According to city staff, there’s no immediate danger.
“It’s an industry standard—everyone uses it, it’s at every construction site, people are using this day-in, day-out,” said Tim Kieffer, Golden Valley Public Works Director. “So we just wanted to inform the public and leave it up to them if they want to continue and use the rinks or not.”
The contamination is present in the rinks at Scheid, Lions, Medley and Wesley Parks.
City officials are working with a consultant to determine what should happen next with the rinks.
