Golden Valley Crime Prevention Fund Honors Student with $2,500 Scholarship
The Golden Valley Crime Prevention Fund awarded a scholarship Thursday to a student who plans to enter the law enforcement field.
“We feel scholarships are critical to to help address our future need for law enforcement-type careers,” said Karen Boehne, president of the Golden Valley Crime Prevention Fund. “We’re here to help and get students ready at this very critical time in their education. It’s very difficult to make decisions about your future.”
The nonprofit awarded Jessi Bloom, a resident of Bigfork, Minn., with a $2,500 scholarship.
“I’m going to use this to help me go through school and to get technology that I need,” Bloom said.”It’s very helpful because I live two hours away from school so if I need to travel there, or for a new computer, and just even paying for my tuition.”
Bloom is a student at Bemidji State University. After college, she hopes to become a probation officer in the Leech Lake Reservation area. She’d also like to work with children.
She said her mother inspired her to enter the law enforcement-field.
“I grew up with my mom as a chief of police so I was always comfortable around law enforcement,” Bloom said. “But I knew other kids who had troublesome family homes and they weren’t always comfortable with law enforcement entering their homes. So I just want to make sure that kids know that it’s safe and they can talk with law enforcement when needed.”
The Golden Valley Crime Prevention Fund also offers rewards for tipsters that help solve crimes.
