Friends Of The Library Sales Offer Cheap Books, Community Connection

4:14 PM | Monday, March 31, 2025

Fans of the written word have a good reason to get excited — there’s a series of book sales coming up that offer cheap prices and a chance to support the state’s largest library system.

The Friends of the Hennepin County Library will be hosting more than a dozen book sales starting this spring.

Scott Duimstra, director of the Hennepin County Library, told CCX News that the sales offer a green way to cycle out old titles.

“For our physical collection, there’s about 3.3 million items within the collection at all of our 41 libraries. For our digital collection, it’s just under half a million titles. And those items have been checked out in 2024 — 12.3 million items went out,” Duimstra said. “And so, it’s a well-loved collection, so you can see that when a collection is that well-loved, we have to get replacement items. The Friend’s book sale helps us get replacement items because it provides a new home for that item.”

Book Sales Offer Chance to Connect

During the sales, older books in the library collection are moved off the self and sold to make room for new items.

Many of the books are priced at $1-2, while childrens’ books sell for 50 cents.

The proceeds from every sale goes back to the Hennepin County Library.

Kristi Pearson, Executive Director and CEO of Friends of the Hennepin County Library, said it’s a great opportunity to connect with other book lovers in the community.

“Whenever we have people coming together, you have lots of conversations about different topics, book recommendations, and it’s just a joyful experience,” she said.

The Golden Valley Library is hosting a sale this weekend.

There’s additional book sales on the way across the system. The Plymouth Library will host a sale on May 10.
