Fridley Man Charged in Brooklyn Park Baseball Bat Beating
A Fridley man was charged on Wednesday after allegedly beating his estranged wife’s boyfriend with a baseball bat in Brooklyn Park.
Mario Riera-Arias, 32, was charged this week with first-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault.
According to the criminal complaint, the victim is in critical condition and in a medically-induced coma at a hospital.
Police say they found the victim badly beaten and unresponsive in front of his mother’s home at around 3 a.m. on Dec. 9.
According to the criminal complaint:
Witnesses saw Riera-Arias run from the scene of the assault to his vehicle. He then fled the area.
Security camera footage shows Riera-Arias run up behind the victim with a metal baseball bat as he stood on the stoop.
He then allegedly hit the victim at least 45 times.
While police were at the hospital, the victim’s girlfriend called to check on his status. She told officers she had previously been married to Riera-Arias and they had separated. She said they were in the process of getting divorced.
The victim’s girlfriend told police he had been at her home just before the attack.
Riera-Arias told two other individuals about the attack, according to the complaint.
He is currently in police custody at the Hennepin County Jail.
