DNR Seeks Input on Medicine Lake Fish Management Plan
The Department of Natural Resources is seeking feedback from those who fish on Medicine Lake.
It is a part of the DNR’s fisheries management plan, which helps manage fish populations.
Some things the department has done in the past include limiting the number from each fish species that can be caught in a day. Fisheries specialist Kristan Maccaroni said this helps promote a healthy lake environment.
“It’s important to not over-fish a population,” Maccaroni said. “We value our fisheries and we want them to persist. If too many fish are taken out and there are not enough to reproduce, we are going to lose that. And we don’t want to do that, we want to take care of our fish.”
As the DNR works out its plan for the lake, it hopes to hear from those who use it.
If you fish or use Medicine Lake in any way, the DNR is seeking feedback. Some things Maccaroni hopes to learn are what kinds of fish people like to catch, how often they fish and what kind of experience they hope to have on the lake.
You can send feedback to the West Metro Fisheries department in Shakopee. The email address is metrowest.fisheries@state.mn.us. You can also call the office at 952-236-5170.
The DNR is taking feedback through the end of February.
