Cybersecurity Experts Recruiting Students at Brooklyn Park Summit
More than 100 high school and college students competed in a cyber sports tournament in Brooklyn Park on Monday.
It was part of a larger, three-day Cyber Security Summit hosted at the Marriott Northwest.
For the students, it was a chance to hone their skills and get noticed by industry insiders.
“It gives them exposure also to the industry, so you’ve got industry folks here today who are recruiting, and walking around looking at 16-year-olds and saying, ‘wow, I want that one coming to work for me,’ so it’s a lot of fun,” said Shawn Riley, a cybersecurity expert and co-CEO of the company Bisblox.
Players competed in a virtual game similar to capture the flag.
The summit also features speakers ranging from Federal Bureau of Investigation agents to industry leaders.
According to Riley, there’s a significant need for cybersecurity employees in Minnesota.
“We’ve got all these other aspects of massive healthcare capacities here, agricultural aspects, energy capacities, all these things that are part of the community,” he said. “And every single one of them is at risk by cybersecurity threats.”
The summit runs through Wednesday.
