Crystal Police Host Catalytic Converter Seminar on June 2
Crystal Police are holding a catalytic converter seminar to try to reduce thefts.
“Nationwide in the last four to five years, it went from approximately 1,500 to 1,600 total thefts of catalytic converters in the entire country to now we are upwards of 26,000,” said Sgt. Brandon Dorr from Crystal Police.
Dorr says there are some precautions that you can take to try to thwart thieves. You can park in a well-lit area and park inside if possible. You can also mark your catalytic converters with an identification number to make them more difficult to sell.
Dorr says thieves are targeting hybrid vehicles.
“Hybrids tend to be hit harder because they have more precious metals and their metals tend to age better,” said Dorr. “So the catalytic converters last longer so the precious metals last longer and they can get more money for them.”
Crystal Police will hold a catalytic converter awareness seminar on June 2 at 6 p.m. at the Crystal Police Neighborhood Outreach Office in the Crystal Shopping Center. You can also watch online at go.crystalmn.gov/3L1TYtp.
