Cooper High School Staff Confiscate Ax, Stun Gun from Student’s Backpack
A student was found to have brought multiple weapons into New Hope’s Cooper High School on Monday, Jan. 7.
According to a message sent from Cooper Principal Shaunece Smith to families this week, a student brought a small ax and a stun gun.
Officials found the weapons inside the student’s backpack.
School employees were tipped off that the student had weapons through the Say Something Anonymous Reporting System.
The reporting system, which is available throughout the Robbinsdale Area School District, allows students and families to send anonymous tips to district staff if they believe violence could occur.
“I am grateful that someone shared what they knew about this situation, and that as a result nobody was hurt,” wrote Smith. “This is not how we wanted to start the second part of the year: with anxiety for students, families and staff.”
New Hope police did not immediately respond to a request to comment on the incident.
Smith encouraged students to use the reporting system or talk to a trusted adult if they think violence is imminent.
While the investigation into the incident is ongoing, Smith said the district cannot provide additional details due to data privacy laws.
“I’m sorry for the concern this may have caused you and your student,” Smith said. “We work to create an environment in which all students feel welcome and safe. If your student wishes to talk about what happened, our care and support staff members are always available.”
