Complaint: Four Charged After Brooklyn Park Shooting, Disagreement Over Sale of Shoes
Four men were charged with assault, robbery, fleeing police and reckless driving after an April 11 shooting in Brooklyn Park.
The victim was attempting to sell a pair of shoes when he sustained four non-fatal gunshot wounds.
Jayquann Kennedy, a St. Paul resident, Corey Stewart, a Fridley resident, Deneco Plentyhorse, a Columbia Heights resident, and Ledale Robinson, a Brooklyn Park resident, were charged in connection with the incident.
Kennedy, 24, Stewart, 24, and Plentyhorse, 22 were charged with first-degree aggravated robbery and two counts of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon.
Meanwhile, Robinson, 21, was charged with fleeing police in a motor vehicle and reckless driving.
Disagreement Stemmed Over Sale of Shoes
According to the criminal complaint, Brooklyn Park Police were dispatched to the 3500 block of Brookdale Drive following multiple reports of a shooting in the area.
Arriving officers found an adult male with four non-life threatening gunshot wounds.
He was transported to a hospital for treatment.
When interviewed by police, the victim told police he traveled to the scene of the shooting in a red Ford 500 sedan owned by an associate. The two men arrived at the scene with plans to sell a pair of shoes to a third party.
After the car parked, a white sedan parked behind the red sedan, blocking it into the parking spot.
A man wearing a black ski mask exited the white sedan and entered the red sedan.
Following this, another two individuals wearing black ski masks exited the white sedan and approached the red sedan from either side.
Nonfatal shooting
The victim witnessed the suspect inside the vehicle brandish a firearm with an extended clip.
A gunfight ensued, with a least one of the masked men firing a volley of gunshots into the vehicle.
Investigators later located more than 15 spent shell casings at the scene.
Four of the bullets struck the victim, who then ran from the vehicle to nearby townhomes “begging for someone to call 911,” according to the criminal complaint.
Following the shooting, the three masked men returned to the white sedan and fled the scene.
A witness reported that one of the masked men appeared to be injured, and that his foot was sticking out of the rear driver-side door as the car fled the scene.
In the following investigation, police found a suspicious vehicle in the driveway of a residence in the 4900 block of Brookdale Drive North.
Approaching officers found Plentyhorse — who is on parole after pleading guilty to first-degree aggravated robbery in 2021 — standing outside of the vehicle.
Stewart was found in the driver’s seat of the vehicle. He was wearing a black ski mask and had a gunshot wound to his right hand.
Kennedy was found lying in the back seat of the vehicle with a gunshot wound to the leg. A black ski mask was found in his personal belongings.
Kennedy and Stewart did not provide police with any explanation for their gunshot wounds. Both were transported to the hospital and treated for their injuries.
Police executed a search warrant on the residence and found several firearms.
Among them were a Glock which had been modified with an auto sear for fully automatic firing.
Brooklyn Park Police Inspector Elliot Faust told CCX Media that the victim has been discharged from the hospital. See story here.
Car chase
During the investigation, Brooklyn Park Police Officers attempting to speak with a witness approached a residence in the 3500 block of Brookdale Drive.
While officers approached the residence, they saw a silver Chevy Malibu leaving the area.
Police ran the plate number of the vehicle and found it was registered to the same address as the potential witness.
Officers followed the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop.
Robinson, the driver of the vehicle, pulled over as officers activated their squad car lights.
Another unidentified individual sat in the passenger seat next to Robinson.
As officers approached the vehicle on foot, Robinson fled the scene.
Officers gave chase, with speeds reaching 80 miles per hour on Humboldt Drive.
At one point during the chase, officers lost visual contact with the vehicle.
A short time later, a second squad car relocated it.
The chase continued onto the southbound lanes of Highway 252, where Robinson struck an orange construction sign.
He pulled over near the intersection at Brookdale Drive where police took him into their custody.
Police believe the passenger in the vehicle escaped when officers lost visual contact with the vehicle.
