Community Helps to Build Brooklyn Park Charter School Playground
A Brooklyn Park Charter school is getting something that’s been nearly two decades in the making.
Excell Academy has never had a playground since the school opened in 2001. But all that is about to change.
Volunteers on Thursday will begin to construct two play spaces and a basketball court at nearby Fair Oaks Park. The Brooklyn Park City Council voted unanimously to allow the school to lease the land for the playground. When school is not in session, the community can enjoy the play area. Excell Academy officials say the playground will mean everything to the students.
“They’ve had to sacrifice for so many years,” said Sabrina Williams, founder of Excell Academy. “Thankfully, the school next door did share on a very limited basis. Our students would have to get off the playground when students from the other school would come out. They were sad.”
Excell Academy is still looking for volunteers to help install the play equipment on Thursday through Saturday.
