Amanda Cheng Xiong, Shelle Page and Tony McGarvey have won seats on the Brooklyn Park City Council in the Nov. 5 general election.
In the East District, 22-year-old Amanda Cheng Xiong defeated sitting council member Boyd Morson. She received 7,263 votes, or 60.22 percent of the vote, while Morson received 4,730 votes, or 39.22 percent.
“I am feeling over the moon and super, super blessed for this opportunity to be able to represent my community,” she said. “I just feel so fortunate to even come across 60 percent and so I just want to say thank you to the community for choosing me.”
Cheng Xiong will be the youngest member of the council governing Minnesota’s seventh largest city.
“It’s an honor,” she said. “I think for me personally, it’s also just a platform for a lot of our youth to be able to ensure that their voices are also being heard. And also just to be now a council member at 22, a role model for them as well too.”
Morson, meanwhile, has been a controversial figure on the council since his election in 2020. He’s been censured twice — once for alleged inappropriate touching of a city staff member. He’s currently one of two members representing the Central District, but due to redistricting, he had to run for an East District seat.
Page Edges Wako in Central District
In the Central District, Shelle Page narrowly defeated Teshite Wako.
Page received 5,734 votes, or 51.28 percent of the vote. Wako received 5,387 votes, or 48.18 percent of the vote.
“I wasn’t sure what to expect — this was my first time, and my opponent, this was his third time,” Page said. “So we didn’t expect it either, and we were just excited, and nervous, and really happy when we saw the results. We worked really hard.”
Page is a loan officer and 25-year resident of Brooklyn Park.
She said her door-knocking push may have given her the upper hand.
“I think just canvassing every single neighborhood and shaking as many hands as I could, and listening to all the residents in Brooklyn Park — I really care about our community and I go to meet so many people who also want to make this a better place to live,” Page said.
She told CCX News she hoped to see “synergy [within] the council where we’re all working together to make this a better place to work, live and play, and get along and listen.”
McGarvey Defeats McGarvey in West District
In the West District, incumbent Tony McGarvey defeated Daniel Goba.
McGarvey received 4,382 votes, or 56.75 percent of the vote. Goba received 3,275 votes, or 42.41 percent of the vote.
McGarvey is a painter by trade and a U.S. Army veteran.
He previously defeated Goba in a 2023 special election for the West District seat.
