Championship-winning Dancers Open SOUL Ballroom in Plymouth
In the sensational and sequined world of ballroom dancing, Igor and Meghan Afonkin shine as a power couple.
They first met on the professional ballroom circuit and went on to get married and win a U.S. Championship title.
Today the Afonkins are the owners of Plymouth’s only ballroom dance studio: SOUL Ballroom.
“Most people who never dance, the first thing they say is that they have two left feet,” said Igor Afonkin. “The best thing about our studio is that we have a system where they start learning simple steps and then at every stage of their dance we are adding more techniques.”
While Igor learned to dance in his native Russia, Meghan grew up taking tap, jazz and ballet at what is now the Summit Dance Shoppe in Plymouth.
Meghan’s personal journey with dance took on greater meaning when she faced health issues that forced her to take a break from dancing. Through this experience, she says she gained a deeper understanding of the impact dance has on the soul and wants to share that insight with others.
“If you’re going through a hard time physically or mentally, we have tools and use dancing as a tool to help you get through those tough moments,” states Meghan.

Meghan says that SOUL’s mission is to awaken the soul of every individual through dance, movement, music and community. She believes that dance is innate to our soul and transcends age.
“If you look back at when you were a child, we all danced and let that inner child play and be free when we heard music,” said Meghan. “It can be very intimidating when you’re at a different stage in life, but we provide a safe environment, supportive teachers, and a warm, welcoming community for anyone to come in and feel great doing it.”

In addition to ballroom dancing, the studio specializes in creating custom dances for special occasions like weddings, as well as classes geared for kids and teens.
