Challenge Accepted: Maple Grove Lions Surge Ahead of 500 lb. Plastic Recycling Goal
The Maple Grove Lions took on a challenge of recycling 500 pounds of plastic film during a six-month period.
According to environmental researchers, Americans are generating more plastic trash than ever, and very little of it gets recycled.
So the civic group took on a challenge of collecting plastic that will be turned into composite decking boards. The Maple Grove Lions heard about the challenge from Trex, a major manufacturer of plastic decking materials, which have become a popular alternative to wood.
They reached their goal of recycling plastics much faster than anticipated.
“It’s a lot of plastic, and actually our 500-pound goal was met our very first month,” said Lee Newman with the Maple Grove Lions. “Right now we’re halfway through the second month and I would say we’re probably close to a thousand pounds.”
The plastic recycling challenge runs through October.
