CCX Viewers’ Choice Winner for Best Donuts: Dufner’s Donuts in Plymouth
On National Donut Day, it’s hard to resist the sugary breakfast treat. Visitors to Dufner’s Donuts and Deli Friday morning certainly gave into that craving. Many CCX viewers would say they made the right choice, as Dufner’s took the cake for best donut in the northwest suburbs.
The shop was busy early Friday morning as customers stopped by for a taste. Mario Cortolezzis, who took orders from customers, said the heavy foot traffic came as a bit of a surprise.
“I went back to get something, and I came out and there was a line to the door,” Cortolezzis said. “I was like ‘I just went to the back.'”
Dufner’s was so busy that Cortolezzis stepped in to help — and he isn’t even an employee, but a friend of the owners. This rush is new to these business owners since they just took over the Plymouth staple a year ago.
“We were expecting a rush today, but this is crazy,” said Kyle Bolduan, co-owner of Dufner’s.
He and his wife Thida Ny took over the longtime deli with a dream of adding donuts to the menu. Ny came prepared with a family recipe and a willingness to work hard.
They took their time rolling out donuts because they wanted to get it right. Boulduan said its paid off.
“My wife is the maker of the donuts. She’s the one that starts the dough and everything like that at about 4/3:30 in the morning,” Bolduan said.
Community Support
Today, an award commemorated their hard work after viewers voted Dufner’s the Best Donuts in the viewing area on a CCX Facebook competition. Bolduan said much of the business is thanks to community support and the poll.
“Plymouth has been amazing,” Bolduan said. “You can tell today — we’re sold out of donuts by 9:30 [a.m.].”
Coming in second place this donut day, another community staple: Funner Brothers Donut Company in Golden Valley.
