Carp Removal Underway at Crystal Lake
A big project is underway to help improve the water quality in one of Robbinsdale’s most popular lakes.
Crews began working last week to remove invasive carp from Crystal Lake.
Experts say the fish can reproduce quickly. Moreover, when a lake becomes overpopulated with the invasive fish, they can kill off native plants and make the water cloudy.
“[Removing carp is] supposed to help with the balance of things,” said Jenna Wolf, water resources specialist for Robbinsdale. “So it’s supposed to help keep those populations down to a reasonable level, helps our native populations bounce back, and to actually do their own active control of the carp populations.”
The city of Robbinsdale has partnered with the Shingle Creek Water Management Commission on this effort.
Crews will be removing the carp twice a week for the next several weeks.
This is also part of a continuing effort to control carp populations. Several thousand carp have been removed from the lake in the last several years.
The project is expected to wrap up by the end of June.
