Business Owner Gets Help in Cancer Battle
Cake Box Bakery has been a fixture in New Hope for decades. In 2006, Dalen and Roxie Johnson purchased the place. The award-winning bakery specializes in edible works of art.
“I design a cake, and I go back there and tell her what I designed,” said Dalen.
But now this team is dealing with the exact opposite of sweet. Last Christmas, Roxie noticed a lump on Dalen’s neck.
Pointing to his neck, Dalen said “This was swollen up about, almost, the size of my fist.”
It turns out, he has an aggressive form of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. He had surgery to remove one of the nodes and started chemotherapy. The treatment left him with some negative side effects.
“I have a problem with memory loss, and confusion, and problems with vertigo,” Dalen explained.
Dalen knows this won’t be a cake walk, but he’s not fighting this battle alone. Roxie is right by his side.
“I come early in the morning so that I can leave a little earlier so that I can be with him too.” said Roxie.
The bread isn’t the only thing rising at the bakery, so are the medical bills. A longtime customer is trying to do something about that. In the past, the bakery has donated cakes and money to the community. Now, Laura Barnes says it’s their turn. She’s hosting a fundraiser for the family.
Both Dalen and Roxie are very grateful. Meanwhile, Dalen says he’s going to remain optimistic, praying for a positive outcome.
“I gotta do what I can to fight this the best I can.”
The fundraiser will be held July 1, 2018 at the Crystal VFW 12:00 p.m.- 4:30 p.m. There will be a bake sale and spaghetti dinner. The Hot Rod and Classic Car Club will show off their rides, and live music will be provided by the band, “Usual Suspects.” Meanwhile, you can donate to the family’s GofundMe page: https://www.gofundme.com/color-for-the-cure-dalen-johnson
